Description

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a 2-day Workshop combining the effects of encaustic with mixed media by award winning artist, Flo Bartell.

Flo expresses her response to the world through the texture and intense colors possible with encaustic (hot wax, resin and pigments), with mixed media applications that often include fiber.  “I am driven to create, so I escape to my studio to savor the fragrance of wax, the rhythm and warmth of my torch and the texture and rich colors possible with encaustic. My paintings and sculptures evolve, even when I try to plan. I build up layers, then scrape them away, revealing a history. Then I add more wax. I experiment, construct, deconstruct and redo until my art reveals my story.”

Flo earned a BA in Education and English from Furman University, South Carolina and a Masters Degree in Counselor Education from University of South Carolina.  Continued studies included two years of art education at Cuesta College.  She pursued a career in education and mental health. After many years working in those disciplines, she opened a needlework business, taught needle arts, and designed children’s clothing, quilts, embroidery, and needlepoint.

Flo is a member of Surface Design Association and International Encaustic Artists.  Currently, she serves as co-chairperson of the exhibition committee of International Encaustic Artists and Co-President of The Painters Group of San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.  Flo served as a past President of Morro Bay Art Association.

Students will learn encaustic basics while experimenting with the numerous ways this versatile wax and pigment medium can be used. The possibilities are endless!  Encaustic does not have to be difficult.  Some experience is helpful but not required.
